You are entering Camp Green Lake

A
fter relaxing on vacation, I started reading the book “Holes”. When I see cover of the book, which has a very low resolution, I thought that the book’s not so good.  I believe the appearance can deceive people, because the book is better than I’ve expected.
“Holes” by Louis Sachar is a children book. The main character “Stanley” has been sent to Camp Green Lake for a crime he didn’t commit. When he arrived at the camp he realizes that the camp is different from what he’d expected. He and other boys are forced to dig holes.
“During the summer the daytime temperature hovers around ninety-five degrees in the shade-if you can find any shade. There’s not much shade in a big dry lake.” (p.7)
“He felt like he was digging his own grave.” (p.35)
I think that this book is interesting and amusing. However, it isn’t funny what in the camp happens.
“Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before.” (p.9)
“Maybe he’d make some friends, he thought. At least he’d get to swim in the lake.”(p.10)
At the beginning the author writes some part of the story mixed. For instance, the author inserts the story of Stanley's great great grandfather between the paragraphs of Stanley first day at the camp.
Actually I have two questions, which will be answered maybe in the next pages:
  • How find Stanley a post office box in the middle of desert to send him mother letter?
  • Where would the kids dig, if there was no global warming, no pollution and no desert at Camp Green Lake?
There are some strange and mysterious events. (Who is Kissin’ Kate? What is Warden looking for?) We don’t know much about the story at first. It is like turbid water. We get hints about it with every page we read and water become cleaner. At the end we will see, what is under water. I think a good ending is waiting us.
“I was walking home and the sneakers fell from the sky.” (p.24)
I learned there is also a film version of Holes, which is released by Disney in 2003. You can get more information about film on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311289/
